An Unsung Hero by Michael Smith
This is the definite biography of Tom Crean – Antarctic Survivor. Crean was born in Annascaul Co Kerry. He volunteered for Polar exploration. He was one of the last people to see Captain Scott alive, before his ill-fated expedition reached the South Pole.
Crean also played a leading role in Shackleton’s legendary expedition aboard the Endurance. The heroic rescue of his comrades and the sailing of the small open boat the James Caird is covered in detail also.
He retired to Annascaul and opened the South Pole Inn, in the village.
