Hanging from the Rafters by Kieran Shannon

June 14, 2022 By P Commane

This book has a sub-title The Story of Neptune and the Golden Age of Irish Basketball. In the 1908’s Ireland was a much different place.  Cork city has many of the problems associated with the era. Basketball was a means of escape from the humdrum of daily life.

The Neptune club were instrumental in bring basketball to a new audience. They were the best team in the league for many years.

As a result their success helped lift the mood of the population of the Cork area.  They signed a number of high profile American players. These players added a lot of razzmatazz to the games.

This is not just a great sports book but is also a fascinating piece of social history.
