This is a commemorative booklet that was published in 1973 to mark the reopening of the Cathedral after substantial refurbishment works. The Cathedral was designed by Augustus Welby Pugin who was the pre-eminent architect in the British Isles, in the 1800’s.
The foundation stone was laid in the summer of 1842. The Cathedral was consecrated on 22nd August 1855.
The cathedral featured fine plaster work that was a feature of many Pugin’s buildings.
However, the the plaster work was removed during the renovations of 1970’s. The natural stone was cleared of plaster and now features prominently on the walls.
St. Mary’s is a beautiful example of Pugin’s work even if the elaborate plaster work has vanished.
A great place to visit in Killarney.
