George Moore author of novels, plays and short stories came back to Ireland in 1901, at the bidding of W B Yeats. In his own words he came on a “messianic mission”. He devoted his immense energy to the cause of the Gaelic League.
For the next ten years in Ireland he published two masterpieces: a collection of short stories The Untilled Field and a novel The Lake.
Both of these works are the subjects of essays in this collection. The essays are by Declan Kiberd, John Cronin and Tomás Ó Murchadha.
This volume is very good appraisal of Moore’s best works.
